The Rooms We Choose

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt the urge to leave? Sometimes, it’s because the space feels exclusive; other times, it’s because everyone else seems as uneasy as you do.

Navigating the Rooms of Life

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about rooms. My coach often asks me which room I want to be in. I never really grasped the importance of this until recently.

In the past week, I've stepped into many rooms filled with unfamiliar faces and unclear purposes, spaces where entrepreneurs and businesses come together to network. I’ve often found myself questioning where I belong. Is there a chance here for a meaningful connection, or will I be left standing on the sidelines?

Recently, I've felt that the rooms I enter are only interested in the value I can provide as a business, while overlooking my worth as a person.

We all deserve to be recognized as individuals, no matter the setting—whether it’s a job interview, a networking event, with family, or running a business.

People often stress the importance of remembering the humans behind the data, yet we still find ourselves in rooms where we feel reduced to mere services rather than seen as whole individuals.

The Room of Kindness and Community

I’m searching for a room filled with kindness, challenges, and opportunities to support and uplift one another. I want to believe in such a space. I want to believe that people are inherently kind and eager to help each other succeed. But as an entrepreneur, I’ve struggled to find that. I've struggled to be seen for who I am, even though my platform, Be Data Lit, aims to dismantle barriers to accessing data skills.

I want to tear down the walls people build around themselves in these rooms and extend a welcoming hand.

I want to invite those without degrees, who feel invisible and objectified, to step in and be seen for who they are.

A New Room: Data Traveler

That’s why I’ve decided to show you who I am and the world I want to create. I’m offering my first class, Data Traveler, for free. I chose this name because that first step into the unknown takes courage.

Before you know it, you’ve taken another step, and soon enough, you’re journeying in a direction you never imagined.

Transforming Data for Good

We have built a world of data that is difficult to access—one that celebrates "data jobs" instead of acknowledging that every job will increasingly involve data.

It's not just about specialists anymore; it's about equipping people with the skills to secure a stable income in a world growing more complex with technology.

We cannot expect everyone to enroll in a statistics course, yet we often do. We associate data with statistics, degrees, and an elite status, forgetting that data should be a force for good, not just for someone else's gain.

By doing so, we exclude many people from our circles, create unwelcoming environments, and fail to see individuals for who they are, only for who they are not.

I want to reintroduce you to data as a force that can bring hope, kindness, and community. Data is for everyone, not just a chosen few.

It's time we break down the walls of these rooms and make data truly accessible to all.

Join me in creating spaces that recognize each person as a whole individual, where kindness and community flourish, and where data becomes a transformative power for good.

Let's take that first step, and be courageous together.
