The Problem with Current Data and Analytics Education


Data and analytics are everywhere, influencing everything from business decisions to personal fitness. Yet, the current state of data education is far from accessible or inclusive. Here are the three major issues:

1. Assumed Direction: Everyone Wants to Be a Data Scientist

Most data education assumes that learners aim to become analysts or data scientists. Courses dive straight into complex topics like Python, coding, and modeling. For many people unfamiliar with the world of data, this is like throwing them into the deep end of the pool before they’ve learned to swim. The result? They often need rescuing and seldom venture back into the waters of data education.

2. Assumed Knowledge: Everyone Is Already Familiar

The teaching methods are generally tailored for those who already have some understanding of the subject. This creates a high barrier to entry and leads to disengagement from those who simply want to learn the basics. Consequently, only a small fraction of people who could benefit from data education actually do.

3. Assumed Finances: Everyone Can Afford It

The cost of data education is exorbitant. Certificates can run into thousands of dollars, and coaching fees often start in the hundreds. Many courses don’t even disclose their fees upfront anymore.

For most people, especially as organizations cut back on educational budgets, this is unaffordable. The assumption that everyone has disposable income for education is flawed and exclusionary.

The Impact of These Assumptions


These assumptions create high barriers to data education, preventing those who need it most from accessing it. If everyone followed the same path, innovation would stagnate. Diversity is crucial—not just in terms of bringing data education to underrepresented populations but also in integrating data insights across various teams and functions within organizations.

A Solution for Accessible and Inclusive Data Education


To tackle these issues, the approach to data education must change:

1. Start with the Basics

Courses should begin at a level that’s understandable to everyone, even those with no prior knowledge of data. This means explaining what data is, how it impacts our lives, and introducing basic concepts before diving into complex topics.

2. Tailor the Learning Experience

Educational content should be designed to meet learners at their own level of understanding. This could involve modular courses that allow learners to build their knowledge step-by-step, ensuring they grasp fundamental concepts before moving on to advanced topics.

3. Make It Affordable

Education should be free or low-cost to make it accessible to everyone. Offering free introductory courses can ignite curiosity and provide a foundation for further learning without financial strain.
